The timing doesn't advance much when i bring up the rpms kind of jumps around a little a between 8 and 14 degrees marks if it is set on 10 degrees mark. Actually cost the same as cap, button, housing, pickup coil, and vacuum advance. It should be here in a few days with a new ignition control module. I decided at this point I am better off just buying a new distributor. And yes I am on compression stroke.Īfter trying to time it a few more times I have decided I have messed up the springs on the mechanical advance trying to get the reluctor off. ![]() I have done harmonic balancer check it is dead on. If the timing tab doesn't go that far on the passenger side then that equates to 2 1/8" from the timing mark on the balancer.Ok sorry it took a bit to respond back. The timing should advance smoothly to 36 degrees BTDC. With the engine running and the timing light connected and the vacuum advance disconnected, rev the engine till the mechanical advance stops. Then check the timing marks on the harmonic balancer to see how close they are to TDC. Remove #1 spark plug and get the piston to TDC as close as you can by feel. So these parts will be a quick install to knock out some variables.Īdded pics to make sure I'm looking at everything right.ġst pic is harmonic balancer timing marks in yellowģrd is a closeup am I right on what I have them labeled. I ordered a new cap/ rotor / and vacuum advance So I'm pretty sure I messed something up in the distributor mechaical advance while figuring out the reluctor removal(I did look at it and no springs broken or bent metal) or timing or vacuum advance. And I didn't have this issue before I messed with distributor. I don't think it's the carb I did a complete rebuild 6 months ago on the carb and it has been working fine. 1st time we were at 180°/exhaust stroke so we brought it around again till it was point at 1 and then brought it around another rotation pulled/and dropped distributor back in. I turned balancer while dad felt with a screw driver. I have checked the balancer while trying to drop the distributor back in. I was thinking maybe vacuum advance is bad and or worn out and isn't strong enough for the new pickup coil.ġ979 ford f150 300 inline 6 harmonic balancer timing marks Not a backfire through the carb but almost. Starts fine drives fine but if I get into the petal or bring up the rpms gradually while driving in will start to jerk and sounds like a blur blur blur from carburetor. So timing light shows I am dang close to 10° on passenger side and also very close to 10° on notch on drivers side that is made into the cover. My harmonic balancer has 2 notches and I have notched timing gage on passanger side I'm using the second notch in harm going counter clockwise. Got it timed 10° advanced with vacuum off vacuum advance. So I pulled distrubitor 5 or 6 times found TDC each time screw driver into distrubitor hole turned oil pump lined it all up each time. I did this all in the truck no sweat right. Put new one on made sure my pin was in the right slot on the "gear" via pic I took before pulling it all apart. So I tugged on it and had to reinstall the pickup coil screws and pry it up with a screwdriver. While taking old pickup coil off I couldn't figure out how the gear that passes by the pickup coil came off. ![]() While doing that I noticed the vacuum advance was a little loose so I snuggled the 2 bolts up onto with a 1/4 nut driver. I just finished the pickup coil which I was not very confident about going into it because I didn't have any breakdown diagrams but everything seems to be right with that. So I have replaced the list below because it either was dry rotted or I thought it was the culprit. Ok I have had issues with the truck stalling and wouldn't start. This truck sat for 4 years in MI before I towed it to Alabama.
